nctm – here we come!
Yes, you read that right! We are going to San Diego for NCTM! As some of you already know, we are mainly connected to the work we do around ELA, but we are equally enthusiastic about math. After we presented at NCTE in St. Louis in 2017, we decided to try our luck and write a proposal for NCTM in San Diego in 2019. And…it was accepted! Look at our session in the program!
We decided to lean on the work of Dr. Gravity Goldberg and her book Mindsets and Moves. Although the book is written to support readers, we thought the concepts would easily be applicable to all content areas, including math.
Another huge inspiration for this presentation is from Dr. Megan Franke, co-author of the CGI “Blue Book” Children’s Mathematics. At the CGI Conference in 2017, she presented on the idea of “leveraging children’s partial understandings” and the thinking she shared, stuck with us. We’ve also been very fortunate to be able to continue our study with her through our work with the UCLA Math Project, so the on-going work continues to influence us and push our thinking.
Wish us luck as we present this Thursday!
Cheers!
